The iPad with well designed applications is a real game-changer for the potential impact it can have on the learner. Teacher-designed apps offer students many avenues to explore with unique opportunities to learn and correct themselves in a manner that is empowering. This is the ultimate in self-directed learning.
Parents want to know that their children are stretching and growing when they are with their teachers at school. As an iPad educator, I take the same challenges and joys that I observed in my many years of teaching and turn them into apps. I intertwine ways in which our apps can tie back into classroom learning, sensory-rich play, and core curriculum. Whether an app is based in phonics, math or perceptual-motor learning, all of the Mrs. Judd’s Games apps were sparked by—and lead back to—classroom learning.
Snowflake Station
This game gives children the opportunity not just to observe symmetry in nature, but also to learn by doing. Children form the shapes on screen that unfold before their eyes. This allows them to interact directly with a difficult but important concept found in math, science, architecture and more. Read more…
Chalk Walk
Chalk Walk takes the familiar and fun activity of drawing with sidewalk chalk and translates it to a game that encourages school readiness. The pincer grip helps prepare a child’s hand muscles for real-world learning tasks at school, while also reinforcing emerging literacy skills. The final stage, Silly Town, reinforces and encourages a child’s innate need for scribbling and imaginative play. Read more…
Left Right Pup
With Left-Right Pup, Mrs. Judd worked with the KBooM! design team to translate the favorite childhood activities of puppy pretend and outdoor hide-and-seek into an app which encourages children to enjoy the roles of leading and following while they teach themselves left/right directionality. Rhinomite
Our games allow young learners to connect with big educational concepts from an early age. In our new app, the character of Rhinomite is an absurdly heroic figure who offers players the drama of creating fanciful costumes, the exhilaration of pretending to fly, and the challenge of avoiding obstacles in this bustling city setting. Crabby Writer: Phonics, Read & Write
In Crabby Writer: Phonics, Read & Write, players use their thumb-and-finger pincer grip to help Crabby write words in the sand and develop the muscle-memory needed for handwriting. This activity is reminiscent of the popular preschool classroom task of sand writing to enhance the tactile/kinesthetic moment in one’s early letter-formation training. This special beach was designed for building sandcastles, phonics, letter-writing skills and literacy. Read more…
Sendy
With Sendy, Mrs. Judd worked with the development team to create a unique, steampunk-reminiscent aesthetic inspired by innovations of the past, present and future to empower young learners to create, play, tinker and share their work with loved ones. Read more…
Hi Mom!
This game encourages children to use memory and photography to create visual and written messages to be shared with loved ones. A collage board allows children and parents alike to interact with photos and think of fun new captions. And when you create and activate a Juddly account, children can securely send their app creations directly to the inbox of a parent or teacher! Read more…
